Healthy Food. Every Person. Every Day.

SNAP Helps Strengthen Families, Children, and Communities

August 4, 2026

Food can be one of the most challenging expenses to manage when household budgets get tight.

For many families, a sudden job loss, unexpected medical bill, reduced work hours, or rising grocery costs can quickly turn a manageable budget into a stressful one. When that happens, programs like SNAP help make sure people can continue putting food on the table while navigating difficult circumstances.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as SNAP, is the nation’s largest anti-hunger program. It helps eligible households purchase groceries and access nutritious food while working toward greater stability.

At the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, we often hear from neighbors who are doing everything they can to make ends meet. Many are working, caring for family members, attending school, living on fixed incomes, or recovering from unexpected setbacks. SNAP is one of the resources that can help during those moments.

Who Uses SNAP?

One of the biggest misconceptions about SNAP is that it serves only a small segment of the population. The reality is that SNAP supports a wide range of people and households.

According to USDA data highlighted by Feeding America, 79% of SNAP households include a child, an older adult, or a person living with a disability.

SNAP participants include:

  • Working families
  • Children
  • Seniors
  • Veterans
  • People living with disabilities
  • Caregivers
  • Individuals facing temporary financial hardships

Many households use SNAP as a short-term resource while working through a challenging period. For others, particularly those living on fixed incomes, it can provide ongoing support that helps make groceries more affordable. The people who receive SNAP benefits are our neighbors, coworkers, family members, and friends. They live in every type of community and come from all walks of life.

Why SNAP Matters for Families

When people think about food assistance, they often focus on groceries. But food access affects nearly every part of a person’s life.

When families have reliable access to nutritious food:

  • Children are better prepared to learn and grow.
  • Parents can focus on work and caregiving responsibilities.
  • Older adults can maintain their health and well-being.
  • Households have more flexibility to manage other essential expenses.

Many families are working hard and making responsible financial decisions, yet still struggle with rising costs. Grocery prices remain a challenge for households across the country, causing families to stretch budgets further than ever before.

SNAP helps create breathing room during those periods. By helping cover a portion of a household’s food budget, families can better balance other necessities such as rent, utilities, transportation, and healthcare. Access to food provides more than nourishment. It creates stability.

SNAP and Food Banks Work Together

Food banks provide emergency food assistance and connect people with resources when they need help. SNAP helps eligible households purchase groceries directly and maintain access to food throughout the month. Both are important parts of the hunger-relief network.

In fact, Feeding America reports thatfor every meal provided by food banks, SNAP provides nine.

That statistic highlights the scale and impact of the program. While food banks remain a critical community resource, SNAP provides support on a level that charitable food organizations alone cannot replicate.

Together, these resources help ensure families have access to food when they need it most.

Strong Communities Start with Strong Families

The impact of SNAP extends beyond individual households. When families can afford groceries, local communities benefit as well. Children have better access to nutritious meals. Households experience greater stability. Grocery stores and local food systems benefit when food dollars are spent in the community.

Food security affects the health, strength, and resilience of an entire community. That’s why programs that help families meet basic needs are so important. When people have access to the resources they need to thrive, communities become stronger as a result.

Understanding Changes to SNAP

You may have heard recent discussions about changes to SNAP at the federal level.

New legislation known as H.R. 1, or the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, includes changes to how portions of the program may be funded in the future. Feeding America and food banks across the country have expressed concerns about the timeline for implementing some of these changes and support additional time for states to prepare. While policy discussions continue, one thing remains unchanged: SNAP continues to be an important resource for millions of households working to keep food on the table.
