Food Bank of Northern Nevada Donald W. Reynolds Foundation breaks ground and announces capital campaign
New facility will enable additional 3-5 million meals to be distributed annually.

(Reno, Nev.)--At a formal groundbreaking celebration, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada will announce its plans to build the region’s largest charitable food distribution center to help those who are hungry. The Food Bank of Northern Nevada Donald W. Reynolds Regional Food Distribution Center in McCarran (Tracy) is set for completion in May 2008 and will be 60,000 square feet, nearly the size of a football field and almost triple the square footage of the current Sparks location. In addition to the groundbreaking celebration, the Food Bank will also announce its goals for the New Home, New Hope—Our Food Bank for the Future capital campaign. The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation provided initial funding for the project with an $8.2 million capital grant. See the press release for full story.

New Home, New Hope—Our Food Bank for the Future

In its early years, the Food Bank served about 28 partner agencies in Washoe County and distributed food to help feed nearly 1,000 hungry people. Today, the Food Bank serves more than 90 partner agencies in an 80,000 square mile area feeding more than 56,000 people annually. Faced with such a daunting need, the present Food Bank facility is no longer sufficient.

The current Food Bank has grown beyond its capacity. The new building will nearly triple the size of our current facility. A larger Food Bank enables us to handle more food which means more meals—about 2 million to 4 million additional meals—every year.

Our First Permanent Home

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada is campaigning to raise money for its first permanent home. By building a new facility, we can better handle the storage and distribution of available food to meet the needs of the hungry in our region for decades to come.

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada Donald W. Reynolds Regional Food Distribution Center will:

  • Double the food the Food Bank can currently acquire and distribute by increasing room for storing, packing and processing food.
  • Provide an additional 2-4 million meals every year.
  • Quadruple refrigeration and freezer capacity so more fresh vegetables, fruits and dairy items can be accepted and distributed.
  • Cover almost 60,000 square feet, allowing for warehouse storage space that will nearly triple the current leased space.
  • Include adequate administrative offices and rooms for volunteer training and community education.

Help Us Build Our New Home

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada is campaigning to raise money for its first permanent home. The new Donald W. Reynolds Regional Food Distribution Center will be able to acquire and distribute an additional 3 million pounds of food or more every year. That means better nutrition, improved access and additional resources for hungry people across the region. And by expanding nutrition education and our community outreach program, we can come that much closer to our goal of ending local hunger.
