Who Doesn’t Love Awards?

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada was awarded a national Victory Against Hunger Award by the Congressional Hunger Center, Victory Wholesale Group and Feeding America.  It’s true, we like awards.  Why wouldn’t we?

In this case, we were in good company with 26 nationally recognized Food Banks, 5 from the west coast.  This award recognized organizations that had innovative anti-hunger initiatives.  The Food Bank of Northern Nevada is always looking for new and different ways to not only feed the hungry, but to create longer term solutions for the problem.  This award was about our nationally modeled Food Stamp Outreach Program.

The SNAP (formerly food stamps) Outreach Program helps people overcome barriers that are keeping them from receiving this very important benefit.  Our SNAP Outreach Team is all around the area every week  helping people get signed up, doing the interviews and delivering the packets to the welfare office.  In the fiscal year of 08/09, this program helped over 3,500 people get benefits.   Not only is SNAP a great way to help a family make ends meet, but it is also money that goes back into the economy.  For every dollar spent through the SNAP program, $1.84 is seen in economic benefit.

If you or someone that you know needs help, please call us today at 331-3663 and find out if SNAP can help you.  Food Stamp Outreach Information.

It’s true, we love awards but what we love more is if this award gives us the opportunity to get more people signed up for SNAP benefits, because now they know we can help.
